Qualities of a Good SAP Resource

  • November 4, 2022

When recruiting and hiring an SAP resource for your organization, it is essential to ensure that you are selecting a well-suited candidate. The first step of the recruiting process is establishing your organization’s needs and goals. Once that is done, consider what qualities will help fulfill those needs and goals. The ideal candidate will be equipped with the hard and soft skills required to succeed in the role – and be willing to continue to learn in order to meet evolving project complexities.

While the skills required may vary from role to role, there are a few key qualities to look out for during the hiring process. Below, we’ve outlined qualities of a good SAP resource to consider when searching for the ideal candidate.

Knowledge of SAP and Business Processes

The SAP product portfolio is extensive. If a candidate is applying for an SAP position, it is expected that they will have a deep knowledge of SAP and business processes. Having little to no experience in SAP would not only make the individual unsuited for the position, but it would take significant time and money to train them. Once you’ve narrowed down the talent pool to candidates with the required knowledge, consider their specialties. Most SAP resources focus on specific solutions or industries, so cross reference their expertise with your needs. Providing an organization with the best SAP solution requires functional, technical, and analytical skills from the resource in order to ensure the best product is recommended and then implemented.

Communication, Dedication, and Focus

Written and verbal communication is an ideal quality for any position, but with the nature of SAP implementations, good communication is vital. SAP projects typically have a lot of moving parts with several team members, so keeping each other accountable, up-to-date, and unified is important. Along with communication, dedication and focus are required. With particularly complex SAP projects, the ideal candidate will need to have solid time-management and prioritization skills to ensure a seamless and efficient implementation when under pressure or trying to adhere to a strict deadline.

A Learning Mindset

At the end of the day, SAP resources must maintain a learning mindset. As previously mentioned, the SAP portfolio is vast, and candidates may not be well-versed in every single product or solution. With an adaptable attitude, the best candidates will go into projects with an open mind and a willingness to learn from others, no matter how long they have been in the business.
